The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) Course, for Mecklenburg County Council is scheduled for June 24th through June 29th. The course will stress how training and good leadership is critical to the success of Scouting units. This course is designed specifically for Senior Patrol Leaders and Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders of Troops, Presidents and Vice Presidents of Venturing Crews, Captains and Program Managers of Varsity Teams, and Boatswain and Boatswain’s mate of Sea Scouts, and Scouts who might serve in those positions in the coming years.


To become an NYLT trained leader, a candidate must be at least a Star Scout or equivalent, 14 years old, and has met or will be meeting the leadership positions mentioned above to register for this training course. The participant must have attended his or her own unit level leadership training to be considered for this course. The NYLT course will combine the latest leadership training with low-impact backpacking. Therefore, it is important that the Scout has good hiking, camping, and cooking skills. For the safety of the scouts it is a requirement that they wear ankle high boots throughout this week long course.  It is highly recommended that all candidates have learned the following skills prior to the course: First Aid, Camping, Hiking, Backpacking, Wilderness Survival, and Cooking.


Course space is limited! Registration is on a first come first serve basis and each unit can register two (2) participants and (2) alternates total. The date your complete registration packet including payment for participants, is received at the Council Service Center, will determine your Scouts' placement in the course. Payments will not be accepted for alternates at original registration. Alternates must be paid in full within 7 days of notification of being added to the course.  Candidates and alternates listed on the registration form must meet all criteria in order to be considered registered,


  • Completed registration (online or paper form)
  • Signed code of conduct
  • BSA medical form part A, B and C and a copy of insurance card

Alternates may possibly be called to replace "no shows," cancellations, and/or if the original candidate(s) does not meet the criteria until all spaces are filled. No payment should be submitted for alternates at time of registration. Primary candidates must be paid in full, with all forms turned in to be considered registered.  There will be no refunds after May 3rd.


You must commit to holding a post- course session with your Scouts on how to best use their newly acquired skills. With your help, this training course can make a positive difference in the lives of the Scouts and their home units.
